Every Business Needs a Few Licenses and Permits

Starting a business is an exciting and thrilling job. Sometimes in the excitement, you might overlook certain important things that you need to do. Applying for licenses and permits is one of the basic requirements of the business. Not having all the important licenses and permits can be damaging and can lead to various fines too.

The type of licenses and permits your business requires depends on two factors- the type of business you are running and the area where your business is located. Every state, county and city has its own requirements as far as licenses and permits are concerned. Most permits and licenses do not cost a lot; still it is best to include the fees charges in your annual budget. If your business operates in multiple places then it is better to have the required permits and licenses of all the areas.

Given below are the most common State licenses-

  • Occupational Licenses are required for electricians, building contractors, mechanics, realtors, plumbers, barbers, insurance agents, tax consultants, cosmetologists and health professionals.
  • There are licenses regulating the sale of tobacco, firearms, gasoline, diesel, alcohol and lottery tickets.

On the local level, you need to acquire the following Licenses and permits-

  • Business License:
A business operating license is necessary to carry out business operations in every locality, be it a city, state or a country. It is necessary to check with the local government office about the required licenses and permits. Make sure that the type of business you do is according to the regulations of the zoning and planning commission.
  • Permit from the Health Department:
A restaurant or any business cooking and serving food is required to have a license from the health department and be regularly inspected. The department is required to carry out a regular inspection to find out whether the business is running according to the norms and standards of the health department.
  • Permit from the Fire Department:
You might think that obtaining a fire department permit is not necessary if your business doesn’t involve the use of flammable substances but, in places attracting large crowds like a movie theatre or a restaurant this kind of a permit is a must. These places are at risk as anything can initiate a fire.
  • Occupancy Permit:
Many businesses like restaurants, bars etc. are required to have an occupancy permit. This permit regulates the number of occupants accommodated by a business at any time.

Every successful business requires step by step, thorough planning. Planning must be done right from the first step till the last one. Obtaining permits and licenses are a very important part of running a legitimate business, it is really necessary not to overlook planning regarding licenses and permits. Though it might take a little time to get all the licenses and permits, but little extra time spent in the beginning can save a lot trouble in the later stages.
