Many business owners have some type of corporate credit whether it’s a business credit line or just a card. There are some major issues that can happen if you don’t know how to manage your credit. These credit pitfalls can trap you or your business in a lot of debt if not used properly. However, you shouldn’t be in fear of building business credit as it is a useful tool if you manage it properly.

The biggest credit pitfall that exists is the abuse of corporate credit. This problem occurs not only it business finances but in personal finances as well. The problem is that someone will receive and activate a credit card and use it for all of the stuff they want until it’s full. After that they’re stuck trying to pay it off and have just added another monthly bill to their expenses.

The exact same thing happens with business credit. Once the owner has decided to start establishing business credit he or she will use the credit card for business supplies or even personal supplies. Although it’s ok to use your credit card from time to time, you don’t want to get in this habit of abusing it. You should use your business credit line for a safety net for your business and not abuse it by maxing it out.

You should also avoid using your business credit for any type of personal use. Many business owners that use their credit for personal reasons and which results in them putting their business in jeopardy. Many business owners won’t recognize this as abuse of their credit. They feel that they are just building business credit when in reality they are going about it the wrong way and abusing their credit.

You can avoid abusing your credit with a few simple tricks. When you budget your personal finances you should remember to ignore any type of business credit that you may have. This will prevent you from believing that you have more to spend than you really do. You should also do this when you budget your business finances as it will prevent you from putting your personal assets at risk.

You should also consider having a line of credit for your business rather than a credit card. A line of credit can save you money on interest rates as well as make it more difficult for you to use for your personal reasons. If you always have your credit card from your business on you then you may be tempted to use it whereas a line of credit won’t allow you to carry it on you. Finally if you do have a credit card for your business make sure that you leave it at your business so that you’re not always carrying it around with you. If you utilize these tips they will help prevent you from abusing your business credit.
